Jonathan Froines, Principal

Jonathan began his career as a fine artist, and as his drawings and sculptures evolved to room-size installations, he realized a passion for creating immersive spaces that grew and changed over time. This led to a paired study of landscape architecture and heritage conservation, seeking to understand and create the atmospheric spaces that arise at the intersection of design, ecology, and time.

Prior to starting his own practice, Jonathan worked on projects ranging from major public parks in Moscow and Santa Monica to urban plans for London and Copenhagen, to designs for several university campuses. In 2017, Jonathan began creating gardens with a more intimate, plant-focused scale, experimenting with California-native, Mediterranean-climate, and desert plants to highlight dynamic change through the seasons, as well as developing a private plant nursery to cultivate and test these plant species. This work led to a two-pronged practice: full garden design for private residences and hotels, alongside planting design consultancy to larger landscape architecture firms, extending his plant expertise to larger sites and more complex planting compositions.

Jonathan has a Master’s in Landscape Architecture and a Master’s in Heritage Conservation focusing on landscape history, both from the University of Southern California, and splits his time between Los Angeles and Naples, Italy.
